Kindergarten Program

Math

In our math curriculum we stress learning math concepts through self discovery and hands on approaches. For each objective or concept taught, children have opportunities to use a variety of hands on manipulatives, games, and activities to reinforce and practice lessons through the year.

Reading/Language Arts

Educators agree there is no one correct time for a child to begin to read. In the past, the skills of reading and writing have generally been assigned to the first grade curriculum. Today, however, with the impact of television, computers, day care centers and preschool programs, children entering kindergarten have a broader exposure and preparation and are ready and able to absorb more formalized instruction.

Our school adopted a 1997 reading series: Signatures published by Harcourt Brace. This reading series introduces good literature, integrates language arts curriculum, introduces/ reinforces letter recognition, the initial sound for the letters, and beginning sight words. We also work on printing the letters as well as expose kindergartners to a wide variety of writing experiences.
Science/Social Studies/Health

In the areas of science, social studies, and health, we work with a variety of units to expose chidren to areas that enrich and expand their background knowledge.

Below is a general overview of units taught in kindergarten

Science:

Seasons | Magnets | Animals | Plants | Dinosaurs | Apples | Caterpillars/Butterflies | Bears

Social Studies

Holidays | Community Helpers | Fire Prevention | Safety | Maps

Health

Nutrition | Five Senses | Drug Prevention | Happy Healthy Me

Physical Education

Teacher: Mr. Troy Wink

The kindergartners have physical education every other day. They need to wear or bring tennis shoes for phy.ed.days.

Mr. Wink plans various activities which involve gross motor movements such as hopping, skipping, galloping, running, and improving balance and coordination. Weather permitting, we will have a unit of ice skating during the month of January.

Music

Teacher: Mrs. Pat Anderson

The kindergartners have music on opposite days of phy.ed. Mrs. Anderson works with the children in a large group. The children participate in rhythmic activities using a variety of instruments, experience group and individual singing, explore music with movement, and are exposed to many styles of music.

The kindergartners take part in a Christmas program and perform in the “Kindergarten Circus” in the spring.
